Dongzi, a young farmer, came to Wuhan alone with a carrying pole and went to Gao Ping, a fellow villager and friend who came here first. Soon, Dongzi found a job as a loader on the dock. Like thousands of migrant workers who came to the city, he looked forward to making money and changing his life. One day, Gao Ping told Dongzi that he had been defrauded of money by a fat man, and asked Dongzi to go with him to find a girl named Ruan Hong, and said that through this girl, he could find the fat man and get the money back. Dongzi reluctantly found Ruan Hong in the singing hall with Gao Ping and brought Ruan Hong back to his residence. Unexpectedly, Gao Ping and Ruan Hong became lovers overnight. But Gao Ping had conflicts with people in his hometown association. One night, Ruan Hong came to Dongzi's residence and said that she and Gao Ping had made an appointment to leave Wuhan together, but Gao Ping never showed up. The karaoke hall where Ruan Hong worked was raided by the police, and she herself was taken to the reformatory. Gao Ping fought with others and fell into the river. A few months later, Dongzi waited until Ruan Hong returned and gave Ruan Hong the small tape recorder he had saved up to buy, which contained the songs he had recorded in the karaoke hall.
